Ilhas Desertas, Nature reserve in Santa Cruz, Portugal
The Desertas Islands consist of three volcanic landforms - Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande, and Bugio - located 18 kilometers southeast of Madeira.
The Portuguese government established this protected area in 1990, followed by its designation as a Site of Community Importance under Natura 2000 in 1994.
Scientists and researchers frequent these islands to study Mediterranean monk seals, seabirds, and the endemic Desertas tarantula in their natural environment.
Access to the islands requires official permits and guided tours, with transportation available through authorized boat services departing from Madeira.
The reserve spans 114 square kilometers and houses the largest population of Mediterranean monk seals in the Atlantic Ocean.
