Antigo Convento de Corpus Christi

Convento de Corpus Christi is a convent near Gaia's waterfront with a mix of medieval foundations and Baroque architectural styling. The building displays stonework and religious motifs that document different construction phases spanning several centuries.

The monastery was founded in 1354 by noblewoman Maria Mendes Petite and has shaped the region's religious life since then. In the 17th century it was extensively rebuilt after damage from Douro River flooding, contributing to its current form.

The convent now hosts rotating exhibitions and serves as a venue for the city's cultural programs and artistic events. Visitors can see religious artworks and participate in workshops that explore how sacred traditions connect with contemporary creativity.

The site is conveniently located near the Douro and easy to explore on foot with clear paths throughout. Keep in mind that some areas may be closed at times due to events or ongoing conservation work.

The Baroque style of the facade was influenced by renowned architect Nicolau Nasoni, whose work shaped much of Gaia's urban landscape. The building also preserves elements from the 1940s, adding a later layer to its architectural story.
