Old road bridge, Historic road bridge in Portimão, Portugal
This metal truss bridge crosses the Arade River and connects Portimão with Parchal across a length of 300 meters. The structure measures about 6 meters wide and was built to provide a stable passage over the river between the two communities.
Construction began in January 1875 under engineer Bonnet's supervision and was completed in July 1876. This bridge represented a major step in Portugal's industrial development during the nineteenth century.
The structure shows how engineering and local needs came together in the nineteenth century through a practical solution that shaped the region. It remains a place where people crossing it can sense the historical layers of the communities it connects.
The bridge is easy to access and serves as a good starting point to explore the area on both sides of the Arade River. Visitors should note that this is an active traffic route, so the best times for viewing or photography are early morning or late evening.
The original wooden deck served as a community gathering place where local bands performed concerts in the late 1800s. This dual purpose made the bridge far more than just a traffic route.
