Turda

Turda is a town in Cluj County, southeastern Romania, situated along the Aries River in hilly terrain. The settlement spreads across several neighborhoods with residential areas, shops, and historic buildings that form its character.

A Roman military fortress called Potaissa was established here around 166 as a base for the Fifth Macedonian Legion and became an important administrative hub. After the Roman withdrawal, the settlement continued to develop and maintained its role as a regional center.

The town's name comes from its Roman origins as Potaissa, and this heritage shapes how locals understand their place today. Walking through the streets, you notice how the ancient past is woven into daily life and local pride.

The town connects easily to Cluj-Napoca via road and public transport, about 34 kilometers away. Buses and trains run regularly between the two places, making arrival straightforward for most travelers.

The former salt mine Salina Turda features underground chambers now transformed into entertainment spaces complete with a ferris wheel and amphitheater. This unusual conversion of an old mining site into a modern recreation area below ground sets it apart from typical towns.
