Ploiești

Ploiești is a city in Prahova County, Romania, located north of Bucharest. The built area consists of older residential districts with lower houses, industrial zones, and newer apartment blocks toward the outskirts.

The first written mention dates from the 16th century, when the settlement served as a trading post. The establishment of refineries from the mid-19th century onward brought industrial labor and population growth.

The city takes its name from the hills and plains of the region, which shape the area in turns. Locals use the avenues and pedestrian zone for evening walks or meet in small cafés.

The city center can be explored on foot, and public transport connects the different neighborhoods. Weekdays see more activity than weekends, especially in the commercial streets around the center.

Some historic industrial facilities on the city outskirts are now protected as monuments, even though the plants themselves no longer produce. Their characteristic tall chimneys and rusted pipes remain visible from far away.
