Castra Dierna, Roman military fort in Orșova, Romania.
Castra Dierna was a Roman military fort in Orșova located at the junction of the Cerna and Danube rivers, with structures measuring approximately 64 by 54 meters. The complex held barracks, administrative buildings, and warehouses designed to oversee river traffic and guard the frontier.
The fort was founded during Emperor Trajan's reign as Rome expanded its control across the Danube and secured the province of Dacia. After its establishment, the site served as a key stronghold for centuries until eventually abandoned.
The fort served as a hub where Roman soldiers and merchants met along the river, facilitating trade and military presence simultaneously. It shows how the empire projected power at strategic waterways while engaging in commerce with neighboring peoples.
The original site now lies about 6 meters beneath the Danube surface due to the Iron Gates Dam, making direct visits impossible. The Orșova area offers museums and information centers where artifacts and displays document the submerged fort.
Archaeological evidence reveals two distinct ports at the site: a military wharf connected to the fort and a larger civilian port along the Danube. This dual structure shows the fort functioned as both a military installation and an important trade hub.
