Făgăraș

Făgăraș sits along the Olt River at the base of the Carpathian Mountains, featuring medieval stone buildings that line its central streets. The town spreads across a river valley where the water and surrounding peaks shape both its layout and landscape.

The settlement grew at a river crossing used for trade, later defined by a fortress built in the 14th century as a residence for regional princes. In the 20th century, this fortress was repurposed as a prison, marking a dramatic shift in its role.

The heritage museum displays traditional costumes and religious artifacts from the Romanian, Saxon, and Hungarian communities that coexisted in the region. Visitors can see how these different groups expressed their identities through the objects they used and wore daily.

The DN1 national road connects the town to larger cities like Brașov and Sibiu, and the train station offers regular services to destinations across the country. The river valley and surrounding terrain are best explored on foot, allowing visitors to appreciate the landscape at a relaxed pace.

The town sits within view of Moldoveanu Peak, the highest mountain in the southern Carpathians, which is visible from many locations in the area. This proximity to one of Romania's most prominent summits makes the geographical setting quite remarkable.
