Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery, Romanian Orthodox monastery in Sâmbăta de Sus, Romania.
Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery at the entrance to the Făgăraș Mountains with a stone church, living spaces for monks, chapter house and museum collection. The complex sits in the Sâmbăta River valley and combines religious life with access to mountain hiking routes.
Constantin Brâncoveanu founded the monastery in 1701, replacing a wooden structure from the mid-17th century with a stone building. The complex survived the 1761 order to destroy Orthodox monasteries in Transylvania thanks to intervention by the Brâncoveanu family.
The religious community keeps old books, glass icons, coins and church objects that show three centuries of Orthodox tradition. This collection gives visitors insight into the art and faith of the region.
Visitors find accommodations, religious shops and access to hiking trails along the valley on site. The location at the mountain entrance makes it a natural starting point for mountain tours.
The institution houses a number of rare manuscripts and religious objects that were protected during centuries in the seclusion of the mountains. Some of these pieces date from times when Orthodox communities in the region faced strong pressure.
