Balvanyos, spa resort in Covasna County, in the east of Transylvania, central Romania
Balvanyos is a mountain resort in the Bodoc region of Covasna that centers on natural mineral springs and geothermal features. The area includes a cave emitting sulfur gases, mineral baths, archaeological ruins of an 11th-century fortress, and a lake with clear volcanic water.
The place was founded in the late 11th century as the site of a fortress, whose ruins remain visible today. In the late 1930s, a four-star hotel was built to accommodate the growing number of visitors coming for recovery and relaxation at the natural mineral springs.
The name comes from the natural sulfur springs and volcanic origins of the area. Locals and visitors use the place traditionally for bathing in mineral waters and walking through the forests, practices that have been part of local life for generations.
Visitors can navigate the area using well-marked trails that are easy to follow and lead to caves, lakes, and viewpoints. Hotels and guesthouses provide accommodation options, while the area is open year-round for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and skiing in winter.
The Smelly Cave is Europe's largest natural mofetta, emitting sulfur dioxide gases known for healing properties. Visitors can explore this geological feature that has been traditionally used for healing purposes for centuries.
