Mureș Floodplain Natural Park, Protected wetland area near Arad, Romania
Mureș Floodplain Natural Park is a protected wetland along the Mureș River, stretching between Arad and the Hungarian border and covering meadows, woodlands, and around 40 river islands. The terrain alternates between dry land and flooded zones depending on the season and the river's behavior.
The Romanian government officially established the park in 2005, and it received Ramsar wetland status in 2006. That designation brought the floodplain to the attention of the international conservation community and helped secure its long-term protection.
Several monasteries, including Hodoș-Bodrog and Bezdin, sit within the park and belong to different religious traditions of the region. These places are still active today and open to visitors passing through the area.
The Ceala Forest Visitor Center offers accommodation and organizes guided canoe and bicycle tours through the park, making it a good starting point for a visit. Bring waterproof clothing and insect protection, as the floodplain can be very wet depending on the time of year.
The park follows a natural flood cycle that causes large areas to shift between dry and waterlogged states roughly every three years. The plants and animals living here have adapted to this rhythm in ways that make the local ecosystem quite different from a typical forest or meadow.
