Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station, Hydroelectric power station on Danube River, Romania and Serbia
The Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station features twelve Kaplan turbines generating 2,052 MW of electricity across the Romanian-Serbian border on the Danube River.
The construction of this power station started in September 1964 through cooperation between Romania and Yugoslavia, marking a significant engineering advancement for both nations.
The dam's creation submerged Ada Kaleh island, relocating its inhabitants and transforming the regional geography of the Iron Gate gorge area.
The facility distributes power equally between Romania and Serbia, with recent modernization efforts increasing each turbine's capacity from 171 MW to 194.3 MW.
At its completion, Iron Gate I ranked as the tenth largest hydroelectric station globally and remains the largest dam structure on the Danube River.
