Colibița, village in Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania
Colibita is a village in the Bistrța Bârgăului region that sits beside a large reservoir lake surrounded by mountains. The settlement features small houses with traditional roofs, narrow peaceful streets, and flower gardens, while the clear water of the lake and green forested hills create the backdrop.
The original village once stood where the lake now exists and was relocated to higher ground in 1979 to make way for the dam construction. In the late 1800s, the area gained fame for its healing air and housed a sanatorium for treating patients with lung disease.
The village reflects a way of life tied to farming, livestock raising, and forest work that has shaped the community for generations. Summer gatherings and outdoor meals by the lake show how locals and visitors connect with the natural surroundings throughout the year.
The place is reachable by car about 7 kilometers from Bistrța Bârgăului, with the road climbing into mountains that requires careful driving. Visitors can enjoy activities year-round such as hiking, cycling, fishing, boat rides, and winter sledding, with various lodging options including hotels and cabins nearby.
In the late 1800s, the healing mountain air attracted patients with lung illness, and a specialized sanatorium with 16 rooms was built before being destroyed by fire in the 1940s. In the following decades, Swiss-style villas and cabins were constructed until the dam was completed in 1980, completely transforming the landscape.
