Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport, airport in Ghimbav, Romania
Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport is a new facility located in the town of Ghimbav, approximately 10 kilometers south of Brașov city, that opened in June 2023. It features a long concrete runway, modern terminal buildings with clear signage, and parking areas, designed to handle around 300,000 passengers annually.
The airport is the first new airport built in Romania in more than 50 years and was completed after years of planning and several delays caused by legal and financial issues. Its opening in June 2023 marked a significant milestone for the region, providing an alternative to more distant airports like Bucharest and Sibiu.
Local residents view the airport with optimism, seeing it as a gateway that will strengthen connections to other parts of Europe and boost tourism in the Brașov region. The facility represents a chance for local businesses to grow and for the community to become more integrated into broader travel networks.
You can reach the airport by taxi, Uber, or rental car from Brașov in about 15 to 20 minutes. Bus lines such as routes 28 and A1 connect the airport to the city, and a train station in Ghimbav with regular connections is about a 15-minute walk away.
The airport operates with an innovative remote control tower managed from the city of Arad, located about 400 kilometers away, using cameras and computers to monitor landings and takeoffs. This virtual control system saves space and costs while demonstrating how modern technology transforms traditional airport infrastructure.
