Colții Corbului Mare, Cliff and nature reserve near Brașov, Romania
Colții Corbului Mare, also known as Stejărișul Mare, is a limestone cliff formation within a nature reserve on the northwestern ridge of the Postăvarul massif near Brașov. The white-gray rock spires rise steeply above a forest of beech and oak, surrounded at their base by large scattered boulders.
The limestone at Colții Corbului Mare dates back to the Jurassic period and was shaped over millions of years by wind and frost into its current form. The reserve was officially designated in 1980 to protect the ridge's mountain plants and animals.
The name Colții Corbului Mare means "claws of the large raven" in Romanian, a reference to the jagged shape of the rock spires visible from below. Local guides often retell stories about mountain spirits connected to these cliffs, adding a layer of meaning to what visitors see.
Marked trails leading to the site start near Brașov and are signed with a yellow triangle; sturdy footwear is strongly recommended because the terrain around the cliffs can be steep and uneven. There are no cafes or shops inside the reserve, so carrying water and food is important.
Despite covering only around 16 hectares, the reserve holds rare plants such as the bald iris and the blue pepper that are unusual for such a small protected area. Lynx and bear also pass through this territory, which is remarkable given how close the site sits to a city.
