Black Church, Gothic church in Brașov, Romania.
The Black Church is a Gothic church in Brașov in Romania, rising on a square in the historic center. The building measures 89 meters (292 feet) in length and 38 meters (125 feet) in width, with a tower that reaches 65 meters (213 feet) and is visible from a distance.
Construction began between 1383 and 1385 as a Catholic town church and extended over more than a century. The fire of 1689 damaged the building severely and led to its later use as a Lutheran church.
The name recalls the fire of 1689 that blackened the outer walls and gave the building its present appearance. Visitors today see a Lutheran church with around 119 oriental carpets on the interior walls, donated by merchants from the region and filling the space with warm colors.
The church is easily reachable on foot from the main street in the center of Brașov and stands on an open square. Organ concerts take place regularly and offer visitors the chance to hear the instrument from 1839 with its 4000 pipes.
The bell tower houses the largest bell in Romania with a weight of 6.3 tonnes, which rings on special occasions. The building is considered the largest Lutheran church in southeastern Europe and draws visitors from many countries.
