Black Tower, Medieval defense tower in Brașov, Romania.
The Black Tower is a medieval fortification in Brașov that stands on a large rock formation and reaches a height of about 11 meters. The structure features a total of six shooting holes arranged in pairs across three different levels, with exterior walls about 2 meters thick.
The structure originated in the Middle Ages as a defensive element of the city and was later named after a fire in 1689 that blackened its exterior surfaces. This event marked a turning point in the tower's history and shapes its appearance to this day.
The tower carries its name in the local community because of a major fire in the 17th century that permanently discolored the outer walls. Visitors can see today the charred appearance that documents this historical disaster.
Access to the tower is via Warthe Hill and is possible on most days of the week, with varying opening hours depending on the season. It is recommended to wear good footwear as the climb is steep and the rock formation is uneven.
The structure was connected to the nearby citadel through an internal communication system that allowed information to be transmitted across fortifications. A movable drawbridge enabled defenders to cut off the connection when needed and isolate the structure during times of danger.
