"The First Romanian School" Museum

The First Romanian School Museum occupies a stone building with baroque elements that dates back several centuries, situated near Saint Nicholas Church in the Scheii neighborhood. Inside, you find desks, textbooks, religious manuscripts, and documents that show how education developed over time in this corner of Transylvania.

The school building was founded in 1495 and expanded with a second floor in 1760 as the institution grew to meet local needs. It became a museum in 1961 with the goal of keeping the story of Romanian education alive for future visitors.

The building served as a meeting place where local Romanians learned to read and write in their own language, which was uncommon at the time. Walking through the rooms, you sense how this place helped shape Romanian identity in a region where different cultures coexisted.

The museum welcomes visitors during regular opening hours and you can view the collections without needing to book ahead. Keep in mind that the building has narrow passages and stairs, so plan your visit accordingly if you have mobility concerns.

The museum holds printed works from Deacon Coresi dating between 1559 and 1581, revealing that this location served as an early center for Romanian book production. These early publications helped spread the written Romanian language throughout the region.
