Straja, Mountain peak in Southern Carpathians, Romania.
Straja is a mountain peak in the Southern Carpathians reaching 1,868 meters elevation with a prominence of 703 meters. It ranks as the second highest mountain in the Retezat-Godeanu range and serves as a base for skiing operations.
The mountain was officially developed as a ski and snowboarding resort in 2002, leading to major infrastructure investments in the following years. This transformation turned a local mountain into a regional winter destination.
The mountain area serves as a winter sports center where local Romanian traditions merge with modern skiing facilities across 26 kilometers of slopes.
Visitors can reach this location via an 8-kilometer paved road from Lupeni or by gondola during the winter sports season. The accessible approach makes it convenient for both day trips and longer stays.
Five of the twelve slopes feature night skiing under artificial lighting for extended season enjoyment. This capability allows visitors to experience skiing beyond daylight hours in this region.
