Vârful Custura

Vârful Custura is a mountain summit in the Retezat Mountains, part of the southern Carpathian range. The peak features steep slopes and rocky terrain rising to an elevation of about 2,500 meters.

The Retezat Mountains received national park status in 1935, which established protection for the geological formations of the region. This designation recognized the importance of preserving the mountain landscape for future generations.

The mountain holds a special place in local hiking traditions, where people gather to experience the peaks together. Visitors often return to summits like this one to connect with the landscape and share stories of their mountain journeys.

Hikers can reach the summit via marked paths from several starting points including Plaiul Mic saddle and Papusa Peak. The routes require good physical fitness and sure-footing on rocky terrain.

From the summit, visitors can see more than a dozen glacial lakes scattered across the mountain range. These icy waters are remnants of the ice age and create a distinctive feature of the landscape.
