Hateg Country Dinosaur Geopark, Prehistoric fossil site in Tara Hategului, Romania
The natural protected area covers 102,392 hectares of land containing geological formations, dinosaur remains, and diverse landscapes surrounded by mountains.
Established between 2004 and 2005, the geopark preserves fossils from the Late Cretaceous period when this region existed as an island in the Tethys Sea.
The territory includes medieval churches, traditional Romanian villages, and the ruins of Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, the ancient capital of Roman Dacia.
Visitors can participate in guided tours, educational programs, and hiking activities while exploring fifteen different species of dinosaur fossils throughout the park.
The geopark contains skeletal remains of dwarf dinosaurs that evolved on the prehistoric Hateg Island, including the massive pterosaur Hatzegopteryx with its 12-meter wingspan.
