Kendeffy Castle, 18th-century château in Sântămăria-Orlea, Romania
Kendeffy Castle is a noble residence from the 18th century in Sântămăria-Orlea, Hunedoara County, Romania, built as a rectangular structure with three sections and a tower on the main facade. The Baroque decorative elements are concentrated on that front face, giving it a more formal appearance than the rest of the building.
Count Elek Kendeffy had the castle built in 1782 as one of three main residences his family held in Hunedoara County. During the 19th century, the estate became a gathering point for the local nobility.
The main entrance carries a Baroque stone plate by sculptor József Hoffmayer from Cluj, showing the coats of arms of the Kendeffy and Bethlen families side by side. These two names belonged to some of the most connected noble families in this part of Transylvania.
The castle now operates as a hotel and sits along the main road from Simeria through Sântămăria-Orlea. The setting is rural, so it is worth arranging your visit in advance rather than arriving without notice.
In 1874, landscape architect Wilhelm Klensky laid out an English garden around the castle, placing decorative vessels and statues across the grounds. This style of garden was fashionable among Transylvanian nobles at the time, who looked to western European estates as models for their own properties.
