Mălăiești Fortress

Mălăiești Fortress, Medieval citadel in Hunedoara County, Romania.

Mălăiești Fortress is a medieval defensive structure built with a circular stone enclosure, four polygonal towers, and a central keep rising above the compound. The fortress spans six levels and was positioned to command the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built in the early 1300s by the Sărăcin family, prominent nobles who held considerable power in the Hațeg region. This defensive structure marked a period of fortification across Transylvania during feudal times.

The fortress houses a collection of medieval artifacts including weapons, shields, armor sets, and the historical emblem of the Corvin family.

You can reach the fortress from Ohaba de Sub Piatră or Sălașu de Sus by following a paved path to the main complex. The approach involves walking uphill, so wear sturdy shoes and allow adequate time to explore the entire structure.

The central keep could originally be accessed only by a retractable ladder on the western side, providing an extra defensive layer during attacks. This unusual design reveals the thoughtful security strategies of medieval builders.
