Râșnov Citadel, Medieval citadel in Râșnov, Romania.
Built on a limestone hill, the fortress spans 3,500 square meters and features stone walls reaching five meters in height with watchtowers at strategic points.
The citadel's first documented mention dates to 1335, when it successfully protected inhabitants against Tatar invasions while other settlements in the region fell.
The fortress museum displays medieval artifacts, including period weapons, tools, furniture, and documents that represent the Saxon and Romanian defensive heritage.
Visitors can access the citadel through a fortified entrance gate and explore multiple defensive structures, living quarters, and a 98-meter deep medieval well.
The fortress remained unconquered until 1612 when attackers discovered a hidden path leading to a secret spring that supplied water to the defenders.
