Cumidava

Cumidava is a Roman fortress in Râșnov featuring preserved stone walls and towers positioned on a strategic hilltop. The site spreads across the terrain and reveals the typical layout of a military outpost with distinct functional areas.

The fortress was built in the 2nd century AD and served Rome as an outpost controlling migration routes. It stood at the center of Roman influence over the province of Dacia and shaped the region for generations.

The name reflects ancient trade routes that shaped the region long before Roman times arrived. Visitors walking here can sense how this location served as a meeting point between different peoples.

The site is accessible during daylight hours with marked paths guiding visitors to different sections of the ancient ruins. The elevated location offers good views, though flat footwear is advisable since the ground is uneven.

Excavations revealed evidence of an earlier Dacian settlement at this location that ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus mentioned in his writings. These layers show how Romans deliberately chose an already-known site for strategic purposes.
