Râșnov Citadel, Medieval fortress in Râșnov, Romania

The fortress stands 650 feet above Râșnov town on a rocky hilltop, featuring nine towers and two bastions along the commercial route between Transylvania and Walachia.

Built between 1211 and 1225 by Teutonic Knights, the fortress protected local inhabitants from Tartar invasions and maintained its defensive role until the mid-19th century.

The fortress contained a self-sufficient community with 30 houses, a school, and a chapel, reflecting the Saxon architectural traditions of medieval Transylvania.

The fortress opens daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, offering access to exterior grounds, gardens, and a museum displaying regional artifacts and medieval weapons.

Two Turkish prisoners spent 17 years digging a 470-foot well through solid rock, completing the project in 1640 under the promise of their freedom.

What to see in Romania: medieval towns, Transylvania castles, painted monasteries

Romania encompasses historic towns where medieval squares, Orthodox churches, and royal palaces are found. Bucharest, the capital, hosts the Parliament Palace and religious buildings like the 18th-century Stavropoleos Church. In Transylvania, Brașov preserves its 14th-century city walls, and Sibiu features its cobbled streets lined with old houses. Further north, Bukovina contains Orthodox monasteries adorned with Renaissance exterior frescoes. The Romanian territory also offers mountain landscapes and diverse natural sites. The Transfăgărășan road crosses the Carpathians at over 2000 meters altitude, linking two historic regions. Bran Castle and Peles Castle, perched in the mountains, showcase defensive and royal architecture. The saline lakes of Ocna Sibiului and thermal centers like Therme București highlight the country's natural resources. The Danube Delta completes this collection of destinations to explore.
