Castra Cumidava

Castra Cumidava is a Roman military fort in Romania built from stone, still visible today as ruins. The fortification features strong walls and was originally surrounded by defensive ditches that protected the garrison.

The fort was built in the 2nd century and was part of the Roman defense line along the empire's northern border. The site went through multiple construction phases and remained occupied for a long time.

The name comes from the Roman cohort that was posted here, and locals still refer to it in their stories about the region. Artifacts found during excavations show how soldiers lived and worked at this remote garrison.

The fort lies several kilometers north of the town of Râșnov on a river terrace, making it accessible to explore. It is located near Vulcan and can be visited while exploring the area's history.

A smaller fortification was discovered about 40 meters east of the main fort and predates the stone walls. This reveals the site was developed in different phases before the larger structure was built.
