Castra Cumidava, Roman military fort near Râșnov, Romania
The stone fort measures 118 by 124 meters with walls reaching 1.7 meters in thickness, featuring three defensive ditches on its northeastern side.
Constructed in the 2nd century AD, Castra Cumidava formed part of the Limes Transalutanus defense system protecting the Roman Empire's northern frontier in Dacia.
Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed numerous artifacts, including inscriptions mentioning the Vindelicorum Cumidavensis cohort stationed at this location.
The fort remains stand 4 kilometers northwest of Râșnov, positioned strategically on the middle terrace of the Bârsa River near Vulcan city.
A smaller castellum discovered 40 meters east of the main fortification predates the stone structure and indicates multiple construction phases at this military site.
