Biertan

Biertan is a fortified church with three defensive walls and nine towers, combining Late Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. The layout shows how settlers integrated church spaces with practical defensive structures to protect their community.

Saxon settlers founded a community here in the 13th century and later built the fortified church as the settlement's focus. Construction of the walls and towers continued over centuries as the place grew into a significant regional center.

The church reflects the life of the Saxon community that built and maintained this settlement over centuries. Visitors can see today how this group shaped the village through their architectural traditions and artistic choices.

The place is easily reached by road and offers accommodation options in the surrounding area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as pathways across the grounds are uneven and there are stairs leading to higher points.

A small chamber within the church was known as a place where couples considering divorce spent two weeks together. The goal was to give them time to reconsider their relationship before making a final separation.
