Cheile Zugrenilor, Nature reserve in Suceava County, Romania.
Cheile Zugrenilor is a nature reserve in a narrow gorge where the river cuts through towering limestone cliffs. The canyon stretches for several kilometers and is framed by dense forests of spruce, beech, and maple trees.
The area received protection in 1973 to preserve the rare ecosystems of the limestone canyon. The protection measures were officially formalized in 2006, extending safeguards across the surrounding forest landscape.
The name comes from shepherds who once roamed these mountains, and their routes shape how visitors explore the reserve today. Locals and travelers alike follow paths that reflect centuries of mountain traditions and connection to the land.
The reserve is best reached from Vatra Dornei via the DN 17B road that leads directly to the gorge. The Zugreni cabin serves as the main base for hiking and provides guidance on trail options.
The Huchen salmon lives in the cool river flows and is a rare fish that requires swift, clean water. This specialized species shows how pure and undisturbed the waters of the protected reserve remain.
