Deveselu

Deveselu is a commune with military installations in south-central Romania that houses both Romanian armed forces and American naval facilities on extensive grounds. The complex serves as a strategic defense installation shared between the two allied nations.

The site was originally built in 1952 as an air base with Soviet backing. It was transformed in 2015 into a NATO missile defense facility.

The base operates as a restricted military facility with limited visitor access, so touring the grounds is not typically possible for the general public. Best to observe from outside the perimeter or seek special permission for any visit.

The commune experienced an unusual civic moment when residents voted to keep their former mayor's name on the ballot even after his passing. This event highlighted the strong personal bonds between the community and its leadership.
