Nicolae Romanescu Park, Public park in Craiova, Romania
Nicolae Romanescu Park is a public park in Craiova, Romania, covering 96 hectares with 35 kilometers of paths, several lakes, and a suspension bridge. The grounds combine landscape gardening with numerous structures, including a summer theater, a velodrome, a horse racing track, and a zoological garden.
The French architect Edouard Redont designed the grounds in the late 19th century, and his plan won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. Completion took place in 1903 with support from mayor Nicolae Romanescu.
The name honors Nicolae Romanescu, a former mayor of Craiova who championed the creation of public green spaces. The iron pavilion and the castle-style structure serve today as meeting points for families and walkers who seek shade under tall trees.
The paths wind through different areas with meadows, waterways, and shaded sections, so visitors can choose between open and wooded zones depending on their interest. A full circuit takes anywhere from one to several hours depending on the chosen route.
The ponds connect through small waterfalls that flow over shallow steps, creating habitats for water birds and plants. Some areas dry up in summer while others hold water all year round.
