Museum of Oltenia

The Museum of Oltenia is a regional institution in Craiova split across three separate buildings in the historic center. Each building focuses on different subjects: ethnography, history, archaeology, and natural sciences.

The museum was founded in 1915 with a focus on regional antiquities and later expanded to include natural history collections and archaeological materials. Over time it developed into a three-building complex showing the region's heritage from multiple angles.

The ethnography wing displays traditional crafts and regional customs that shaped daily life in Oltenia. You can see how people made things with their hands and understand the skills they passed down through generations.

The three buildings are close together in Craiova's center and easy to walk between on a leisurely visit. You can move at your own pace from one section to another and spend as much time as you want on subjects that interest you.

Inside the natural history building is a working pottery workshop where traditional ceramics are made using old techniques. It is unusual to find a museum keeping such traditional crafts actively alive rather than just displaying finished pieces.
