Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, Craiova

The Cathedral of Saint Demetrius is a religious building in Craiova featuring Byzantine Revival architecture with intricate details. The interior contains wall paintings created by French artists and a handcrafted wooden iconostasis with fine carved work.

The building underwent complete reconstruction in the 1890s after a severe earthquake and received its current form from that period. Archaeological evidence shows that religious structures have stood on this site since the 8th century.

The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Demetrius and displays religious artworks by French painters throughout its interior. The wall paintings and carved wooden screen reflect orthodox traditions and local spiritual practices.

There is no entrance fee and the building is easily located on Matei Basarab Street. Visitors should dress modestly and respect the quiet, reverent setting when exploring the interior.

A French architect supervised the reconstruction and incorporated stylistic features that were uncommon in this region. This work made the church an architectural rarity in the Oltenia area.
