Carol I National College, Secondary school and historic monument in central Craiova, Romania.
Carol I National College is a secondary school and historic building in central Craiova, recognizable by its dome and decorated interior spaces. The painted walls and ornate halls give the place a feel closer to a public institution than a typical school.
The school was founded in 1826 and received its current name by royal decree from King Carol I in 1885. That recognition placed it among the oldest continuously operating schools in Romania.
The school library holds old religious texts and books that have been kept since the early 1800s. These objects connect students and teachers to the intellectual history of the region.
The building is on Ioan Maiorescu Street in the city center, easy to reach on foot from most central points. Since it is an active school, access for visitors may be limited during school hours, so a morning or weekend visit works better.
The biology laboratory houses a sculptural work by Constantin Brancusi, placed there in the early 20th century and rarely mentioned in public accounts of the artist's work. It shares the room with butterfly collections and mineral specimens, making for an unusual combination.
