Art museum of Craiova

The Art Museum of Craiova occupies the Constantin Mihail Palace and holds more than 8,000 European and Romanian artworks spanning multiple centuries. The palace features marble staircases, silk wall coverings, and Murano glass chandeliers that frame the exhibitions throughout its galleries.

The Constantin Mihail Palace was constructed between 1898 and 1907 by French architect Paul Gottereau for a prominent Romanian family with great wealth. The building transformed into a museum in 1954 and has served that purpose ever since.

The collection reflects the development of Romanian art through works by masters like Nicolae Grigorescu and Theodor Aman from the 1800s. You can see how local artists responded to European movements while developing their own visual language.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday with galleries organized across multiple rooms and levels of the palace. Allow adequate time to walk through the different spaces and appreciate both the artworks and the building's architectural details.

The collection includes early sculptures by Constantin Brâncuși such as Miss Pogany and The Kiss, which represent the artist's initial artistic direction. Medieval Romanian icons are displayed alongside paintings from Italian, French, Dutch, and Flemish masters, creating an interesting contrast between periods and traditions.
