Stadionul Ion Oblemenco, Football stadium in Craiova, Romania.
Stadionul Ion Oblemenco is a football stadium in Craiova, in southwestern Romania, with a white outer structure and seating for around 31,000 spectators. The pitch has drainage, irrigation, and undersoil heating, and the building includes changing rooms and other spaces for athletes.
The first stadium on this site opened in 1967 and served the local football clubs for decades. It was fully demolished and replaced by the current building between 2015 and 2017.
The stadium is named after Ion Oblemenco, one of the most celebrated players ever to come from Craiova, making it unusual in that it honors a player rather than a sponsor or official. On match days, the stands fill quickly and the local crowd is known for being vocal and deeply attached to the home side.
The stadium is reachable by public transport and has parking nearby for those arriving by car. On match days, it is worth arriving early as the roads around the ground can get busy.
The curved shape of the white outer shell was inspired by the sculptures of Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi, particularly his egg-shaped forms. Brancusi was born near Craiova, which makes this reference something locals recognize with a certain pride.
