Peștera Ponicova, Natural cave in Dubova, Romania
Peștera Ponicova is a cave that extends through the Ciucaru Mare limestone massif with multiple galleries spread across two distinct levels and a total length of around 1,700 meters. The chambers are connected by narrow passages of varying widths and heights.
The area around the cave became a strategic military location during conflicts between Austrian and Turkish forces in 1692. The terrain played an important role in the military struggles of that era.
The cave takes its name from snake-shaped limestone formations that wind through the passages and shape how visitors experience the space. These natural sculptures are part of what makes walking through the galleries feel distinctive.
Bring rubber boots, protective helmets, flashlights, and warm clothing when visiting, as temperatures stay cool inside. Access is possible year-round, but the environment is damp and the floor can be slippery.
The cave has two different entrances: one accessible from land and another located directly above the Danube River. This dual connection allows approach from both terrestrial and water routes.
