Cheile Ordâncușei, Nature reserve in Gârda de Sus, Romania
Cheile Ordâncușei is a nature reserve in the Apuseni Mountains where limestone gorges cut through the Ordâncușa Valley. The area features steep rock walls, numerous caves, and natural stone formations shaped by water erosion over time.
The area received official protection status in 2000 when it became part of the Apuseni Natural Park. This designation aimed to preserve the natural formations and habitats found within the gorges.
The gorge takes its name from the Ordâncușa River, which winds through the landscape and shapes the valley. The caves provide shelter for bat populations and remain active ecosystems where local wildlife thrives.
The gorge is accessible from Gârda de Sus via paved routes, with several marked hiking trails running through the area. Spring through fall offers the best conditions for walking, as the paths are easier to navigate.
Inside the gorge lies a natural stone bridge formed through water erosion over many thousands of years. This rock formation is a rare geological feature that shows how water gradually shapes stone.
