Topolnița Cave, Natural cave system in Mehedinți County, Romania
Topolnitza Cave is a large underground system in Mehedinți County with multiple entrance points and several levels of passages filled with rock formations. The network of chambers and galleries creates a complex labyrinth beneath the forest above.
The cave was first documented in 1880 and underwent systematic exploration beginning in 1962 by speleology specialists. These investigations revealed the full extent of its underground passages and geological features.
The path leading to the cave follows the King's Road, named after King Mihai who frequently traveled this route through the forested landscape.
Visiting requires advance planning as access is limited and tours are available only during specific times of year. Bring sturdy footwear and a flashlight since the passages are damp and uneven.
The cave houses one of Europe's largest bat colonies, with thousands of greater horseshoe bats roosting within its chambers. This makes it a crucial shelter for these nocturnal mammals throughout the year.
