Klisura Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Dobrače, Serbia
Klisura Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in Dobrače within the Moravica River gorge. The complex contains a church with an eight-sided dome, residential quarters for inhabitants, and a wooden belfry that stands beside the main structures.
This monastery was built in the 13th century and later suffered multiple destructions followed by reconstructions. Significant damage occurred from a fire in 1688 and again during the World Wars, each time requiring rebuilding efforts.
The church interior shows frescoes depicting Serbian saints and rulers, painted by Simeon Lazovic and Dimitrije Posnikovic in their distinctive styles. These religious images form the visual heart of the place and tell stories of faith through their artistic language.
The monastery sits roughly 13 kilometers south of Arilje along the route toward Ivanjica and operates as a nunnery welcoming visitors. Roads to this remote location are basic, so reaching it requires advance planning and awareness of seasonal conditions.
The monastery gained its name Klisura in the 18th century after heavy rains reshaped the surrounding landscape, replacing its former name Dobrača. This change reflects how natural forces can alter the identity and character of a place over time.
