Saint Achillius Church, Medieval Orthodox church in Arilje Municipality, Serbia.
Saint Achillius Church is a medieval Orthodox place of worship in Arilje Municipality featuring alternating layers of stone and brick in its construction. The southern entrance distinguishes its design from the traditional western portal found in most other religious buildings of this type.
King Stefan Dragutin of the Nemanjić dynasty commissioned this monument in 1296 on the site of a previous monastery. This foundation during his reign established the location as a significant religious center of medieval Serbian power.
The interior frescoes depict portraits of medieval Serbian rulers and church leaders created by artists from Thessaloniki. These wall paintings show how the church served as a place of royal reverence during its time.
The location sits on an elevated plateau near where the Moravica and Big Rzav rivers meet. Regular visiting hours are maintained, and visitors should note that the hilltop position makes access somewhat demanding depending on the route taken.
The burial site of Urošica, the son of King Dragutin, is preserved within the church walls and connects royal lineage to this sanctuary. This grave transforms the space into more than a religious building and links it directly to dynastic history.
