Monastère de la Transfiguration, Orthodox monastery in Ovčar Banja, Serbia
Monasterio de Preobraženje is an Orthodox convent in Ovčar Banja, in western Serbia, set within the wooded hillsides of the Ovčar-Kablar gorge. The community is made up of a small group of nuns who pray, work, and farm together on the monastery grounds.
The monastery was founded in 1978 and quickly developed strong spiritual ties with Simonos-Petra monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. This connection shaped the religious practices followed by the community and established the convent as a dependent house of the Greek monastery.
The monastery sits in a gorge along the Zapadna Morava river, part of a group of monasteries locally referred to as the Serbian Athos. Visitors can enter the small church and observe the plain courtyard, which reflects the daily rhythm of the sisters who live there.
The monastery can be visited during the day, but visitors are expected to dress modestly and keep noise to a minimum out of respect for the community's prayer schedule. Staying calm and unobtrusive makes for a more respectful visit to an active religious site.
The community keeps a flock of sheep certified under the standards of the French Union for Animal Protection, which is unusual for an Orthodox monastery in Serbia. This certification reflects a deliberate approach to animal welfare that goes beyond typical monastery farming.
