Sretenje Monastery

Sretenje Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery situated in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge on the bank of the Western Morava River. The complex features a main church with wooden supporting columns, surrounded by monastery buildings and walls that define the enclosed religious compound.

This religious community was first documented in 1525 and originally stood on the opposite riverbank. The relocated structure was moved to its current location in 1910 when railway construction threatened the original site.

The monastery serves as a spiritual center for the Orthodox community in the region, with monks conducting daily prayers and religious ceremonies within its walls. Visitors can observe how the space functions as a place of worship and contemplation for both residents and pilgrims.

The monastery sits within a river gorge, so visitors should expect uneven ground and proximity to water, particularly during wet conditions. Access is primarily on foot from the nearby village of Ovčar Banja, and the approach involves some climbing and walking over rough terrain.

The monastery was entirely rebuilt after its relocation in 1910, so despite its ancient roots, the current structure is relatively new in appearance. This blend of historical continuity and modern reconstruction makes it a fascinating example of religious community persistence.
