Monastère de la Transfiguration

Monasterio de Preobraženje is an Orthodox monastery in Ovčar Banja where six nuns maintain a religious community following traditional spiritual practices. The community operates a workshop producing agricultural goods and also raises livestock as part of its daily operations.

The monastery was established in 1978 and developed a close relationship with Simonos-Petra monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. This connection made it function as a dependent institution with strong spiritual ties to the Greek monastery.

The monastery serves as a living space where daily prayers shape the rhythm of life for its residents. Visitors can observe how traditional Orthodox practices continue to structure the community's spiritual and practical routines.

The monastery is accessible during daylight hours, but visitors should respect prayer times and dress modestly when entering. The location is easily accessible on foot and provides a quiet setting for exploration.

The community raises a specialized breed of sheep that holds certification from the French Union for Animal Protection standards. This combination of traditional farming methods with contemporary animal welfare requirements reflects a deliberate approach to agriculture.
