Uspenje Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Ovčar Banja, Serbia.
Uspenje Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge in Serbia, set on a hillside above the valley floor. It consists of a small church with narrow rectangular windows and a group of residential and service buildings arranged around a central courtyard.
The monastery appears for the first time in Ottoman documents from 1536, showing it was already an active religious site by that point. In the early 1800s, Serbian scholar Vuk Karadžić recorded the ruins of a defensive tower that stood on the grounds.
The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, which gives it its name, and draws pilgrims especially around that feast day in August. Visitors can watch worshippers lighting candles and attending services inside the small church.
The monastery sits on a slope in the gorge and is reached by a short path with some uphill walking. Visitors should dress modestly and speak quietly, especially during services or when monks are nearby.
The old tower on the grounds once served as a shared bell tower for several monasteries spread across the gorge, which is a rare arrangement among Orthodox monastic communities. This suggests that the monasteries of the gorge once functioned as a closely connected group rather than separate sites.
