Nikolje Kablarsko Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Rošci, Serbia
Nikolje Kablarsko Monastery is an Orthodox monastery built at the foot of Kablar mountain near the West Morava River. The structure follows a trefoil plan with walls made from crushed stone.
The monastery was founded in the late 15th century, with earliest records dating to 1489. It later served as a refuge for Prince Miloš Obrenović during the 1815 Serbian Uprising.
The monastery contains frescoes from 1587 depicting the Solomon Temple, painted by two artists who also ran a manuscript copying workshop during Ottoman rule. These wall paintings show how artistic work continued despite challenging times.
Access to the monastery is best gained through the Moravica District, which leads through the surrounding landscape to the site. A community of nuns welcomes visitors and can provide guidance during a visit.
The Gospel of Saint Nicholas, created between 1240 and 1250 within these walls, is now housed at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. This medieval manuscript reveals the importance of the monastery's scriptorium in earlier centuries.
