Krasnoyarsk Krai, Federal subject in Siberia, Russia.
Krasnoyarsk Krai is a federal subject of Russia located in Central and Eastern Siberia, crossed by the Yenisei River. The territory stretches from the Sayan Mountains in the south to the Taymyr Peninsula in the north, encompassing tundra, taiga, steppe, and Arctic landscapes.
The area hosted settlements of the Dinlin people from the 4th century BC, before coming under Turkic and Mongol control over subsequent centuries. Russian expansion reached the area in the 17th century, leading to the establishment of forts and trading posts along the Yenisei.
Local communities maintain traditional Siberian crafts and organize seasonal festivals where nomadic roots come alive through music, dance, and folk customs. In many settlements, visitors encounter markets with dried fish, handwoven rugs, and wood carvings that reflect the daily life of indigenous peoples.
Krasnoyarsk serves as the administrative center and is connected to other areas via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Orientation is easiest along the main river systems and the few paved roads, with the climate bringing extreme temperature swings.
The territory holds enormous deposits of nickel and platinum, extracted in large mining complexes such as Norilsk. These mining sites often lie far to the north and are only accessible by water or air.
