Russky Sever National Park, National park in Vologda Oblast, Russia.
Russky Sever National Park is a protected area in Vologda Oblast covering 168,000 hectares of northern Russian landscapes with forests, lakes, and wetlands between Lake Beloye and Lake Kubenskoye. The territory features dense woodland and an intricate network of water systems throughout.
The park territory shows traces of human presence since the Mesolithic period, with numerous archaeological sites along the Modlona River dating back thousands of years. The region later became a center for monastery construction during the medieval period.
The territory contains two significant monasteries, Kirillo-Belozersky and Ferapontov, with the latter preserving remarkable 16th-century frescoes by master painter Dionisius. These religious sites continue to shape how visitors experience the region today.
The area features marked hiking trails and water routes that visitors can explore, along with a visitor center for additional information. Prior permission is required for access, so visitors should arrange this in advance.
An early-19th-century water system built between 1825 and 1828 runs through the park with five artificial canals and seven locks still in operation today. This engineering achievement connects lakes and rivers, enabling water transport across the region.
