Korolyov, Space research city in Moscow Oblast, Russia
Korolyov is a city northeast of Moscow in Moscow Oblast, Russia. The city stretches across an area with research centers, residential districts and green spaces along the Klyazma River at an elevation of about 160 meters.
The settlement developed in the 18th century as a site for textile factories and later became a center of Soviet rocket engineering. After World War II, the Soviet Union built space research facilities here that shaped the city's current character.
Residents often refer to the city by its former name Kaliningrad, which was used until 1996. Many streets and public buildings carry names related to aerospace engineering and recall the city's role in Soviet space exploration.
The city lies about 20 kilometers from Moscow and is well connected by regional trains and buses. Visitors should note that some research facilities are not open to the public and require special permits.
Cosmonaut Square in the center displays a full-scale rocket as a public monument. Nearby, a museum shows replicas of space stations and equipment developed in the city.
