Kumertau, Industrial city in Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia
Kumertau is a city in the southern part of the Republic of Bashkortostan, set between the southern foothills of the Ural Mountains and the open plains stretching toward Kazakhstan. The streets follow a grid pattern, and several large industrial complexes shape the cityscape with their halls and administrative buildings.
The city was founded in 1947 as part of Soviet industrialization programs during the postwar period and grew around newly built production facilities. In the following decades, the settlement expanded into a center for aviation and machine manufacturing in the region.
The population of Kumertau reflects a diverse mix of ethnic groups, with Russians comprising 61.6%, Bashkirs 16.4%, and Tatars 12.9% of the residents.
The city is located about 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Ufa, the capital of the republic, and can be reached via paved highways. Visitors find basic knowledge of Russian helpful, as English is not widely spoken in daily life.
The city hosts a large helicopter manufacturing plant that has been operating since Soviet times. Today, the company is part of Russian Helicopters and produces both civilian and military models.
