Langepas, Industrial town in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia
Langepas is an industrial town in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia, sitting 45 meters above sea level on the bank of the Kayukovskaya River. The town lies about 15 kilometers north of the right bank of the Ob River and serves as an important center for natural gas processing in the region.
The settlement was founded in 1980 for workers at the Lokosovo gas processing plant and gained official town status five years later. The development of the town remained closely tied to the oil and gas industry of Western Siberia.
The name comes from the Khanty language and means squirrel land, pointing to the indigenous roots of the region. This connection to local wildlife still shapes the town's identity today.
The town has basic facilities like schools, clinics and shopping centers for the population. This infrastructure is mostly concentrated in the town center and is easily accessible.
The town was one of the three founding components of the oil company Lukoil through the enterprise Langepasneftegaz. This connection to the birth of one of Russia's largest energy companies shaped the early identity of the place.
